Sony Music Celebrates the Music of Doris Day with Expanded Digital Releases & Gold Record Award

New York – As a finale to the centennial of late singer-actress Doris Day, Sony Music’s Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, is presenting the Doris Day Animal Foundation—which continues to carry on Day’s legacy—a Recording Industry Association of America Gold Record Award for her 1958 Columbia album Doris Day’s Greatest Hits. The title was originally certified gold in 1964 and has since sold millions of copies worldwide, remaining continuously in print in various formats for 65 years. The album was a cornerstone of Columbia’s famed Greatest Hits series of releases and features a dozen of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient’s most popular songs, including “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera),” “Secret Love” and “It’s Magic.” Presentation of
the award will occur at a date to be announced at the historic Cypress Inn in Carmel, Calif., formerly co-owned by Day.
To further highlight Day’s extensive recording history with Columbia Records, for which she recorded exclusively from 1941 until 1967, Legacy Recordings has embarked on a refreshment of her catalog, available across streaming platforms and for download. The digital campaign adds Day’s complete repertoire of single releases, along with the full collection of her acclaimed albums.
“Acknowledging Doris’ invaluable contributions to Columbia’s success from the 1940s through the 1960s and beyond, in addition to her tremendous appeal as both a vocalist and actress, is extremely important,” says producer Chuck Granata, a member of the Legacy team working on the catalog. “The focus of Doris’ artistry is what we affectionately call the American Songbook,” elaborates Granata, who is also an avid supporter of the Doris Day Animal Foundation’s mission to make this a better world for animals, the cause closest to Day’s heart. “As tastes change over the years, these songs—and Doris’ superb interpretation of them—will always remain beloved by discriminating music lovers and serve as a master class for music artists throughout the world.”
The new digital offerings are planned for release in chronological order and are split into two main categories: singles and original albums. The singles will be grouped into 40-42 song playlists, while the albums will be presented in their original running order with bonus material when applicable. Playlists may be downloaded in full, or the listener can choose to mix and match individual tracks to create their own customized Doris Day compilations. Alternate takes, unreleased tracks and other rare recordings will be extra features in the series.
The first playlist is titled Doris Day and Les Brown: The Complete Okeh and Columbia Recordings 1940-1946, offering all of the singer’s official song masters with the big band leader. It was during this period that the pair turned the World War II classic “Sentimental Journey”—written by Les Brown and Ben Homer—into a global standard.
